Privacy notice
This notice explains what personal information this website collects, why, and what your rights are. I’ve kept it short and plain.
Who I am
This website belongs to James Merry, a freelance motion graphics artist and animator based in the UK. I’m responsible for any personal information collected through it. You can contact me at post@jamesmerry.co.uk.
Messages you send me
If you use the contact form, I receive your name, email address and message. The same applies if you email me directly.
- Why: to read and reply to your message, and to discuss any work you’re asking about.
- Lawful basis: my legitimate interest in responding to enquiries and, where your message is about possible work, taking steps you’ve asked for before we agree a contract.
- How long I keep it: for as long as needed to deal with your enquiry, and up to two years after our last contact so I have a record of our conversation – longer only if we go on to work together, when normal business record-keeping rules apply.
- Who else sees it: no one, except my web host and email provider, IONOS, which stores the website and delivers the email on my behalf. I never sell your details or add you to a mailing list.
Cookies and similar technology
This website doesn’t use advertising or tracking cookies. It uses only:
- A security cookie on the contact page (called
PHPSESSID). It helps stop spam and forged form submissions, isn’t used for anything else, and is deleted when you close your browser. It’s strictly necessary for the form to work safely, so it doesn’t need your consent. - A note of your animation choice. If you use the “Pause animation” button, your browser remembers your choice so the background animation stays paused next time. This is stored only on your device and is never sent to me.
Analytics
I don’t currently use any visitor analytics.
Website logs
Like almost every website, the server that hosts this site (run by IONOS) automatically records basic technical information when pages are requested – such as your IP address, browser type and the pages visited. This is used only to keep the site secure and working, and is kept by IONOS for a limited time. See IONOS’s privacy policy.
Content from other services
- Videos on project pages are played by Vimeo. When you visit a page with a video, your browser connects to Vimeo, which receives your IP address. The videos are set to Vimeo’s “do not track” mode, so Vimeo doesn’t use cookies to track you. See Vimeo’s privacy policy.
- The Lottie Files project page loads its animation player from unpkg.com, which receives your IP address in order to send it.
- Links to Instagram, LinkedIn and the AOI take you to those sites, which have their own privacy policies.
The fonts used on this site are hosted here, not loaded from Google or other font services.
Your rights
Under UK data protection law you can ask me to:
- tell you what personal information I hold about you and give you a copy
- correct anything that’s wrong
- delete your information
- stop or limit how I use it, or object to my using it
- pass it to you or another organisation in a common format
Just email post@jamesmerry.co.uk. There’s no charge, and I’ll reply within one month.
Complaints
If you’re unhappy with how I’ve handled your information, please tell me first so I can put it right. You also have the right to complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO), the UK’s data protection regulator: ico.org.uk/make-a-complaint or 0303 123 1113.
Changes to this notice
If I change how the website handles personal information, I’ll update this page and the date at the top.
