This is a collaboration with Professor of English and Deorhord author, Hana Videen.
The aim was to develop an idea for a possible picture book about strange creatures!
Solution
Hana translated descriptions of mysterious creatures, originally written in Old English by medieval travelers, into modern English.
My role was to read the description and draw each animal based solely on the description, without knowing any more of the context.
Some of the results turned out quite strange!
Impact
The project plays on the idea that medieval illustrators were often working from incomplete or secondhand information when depicting animals from distant lands… leading to some wonderfully inaccurate results.
